President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rangers International FC after the Enugu-based club clinched the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title for a record ninth time, finishing the 2024/2025 season with 68 points from 38 matches.
The result saw Rangers edge out Rivers United in a closely contested title race that went down to the final stretch of the campaign.
In a statement issued on Monday by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president praised the players, management, and supporters for what he described as a hard-earned and historic achievement.
Tinubu said the victory reflected the club’s rich legacy in Nigerian football, recalling their dominance in the 1970s and 1980s, including league and FA Cup triumphs and notable continental performances such as their 1975 African Cup of Champions Clubs final appearance and 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup victory.
He also commended Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, linking the club’s success to ongoing investments in sports development and youth engagement in the state.
“I must also congratulate Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State on the victory of Rangers International FC. This victory is an obvious fruit of his administration’s investments in youth and sports in the state,” the president said.
Rangers, one of Nigeria’s most storied football clubs, have remained a major force in domestic football and have produced players who went on to represent the country at the international level.
Tinubu also praised Rivers United for their strong performance throughout the season, describing their campaign as competitive and disciplined despite missing out on the title.
Both Rangers International FC and Rivers United are expected to represent Nigeria in next season’s CAF Champions League.
