Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, turned one of football’s biggest global stages into a call for justice on Wednesday as he used the FIFA World Cup countdown concert to spotlight the plight of abducted pupils and teachers from Oyo State.

Ahead of his highly anticipated performance at the official 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown concert in the United States, the Nigerian music star appeared in a customised outfit carrying the names of victims of a recent school abduction in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The gesture quickly drew attention on social media and among football fans worldwide, with many praising the singer for using his international platform to amplify a humanitarian issue affecting communities back home.

A viral backstage video showed Davido wearing a black leather jacket decorated with green circular badges bearing the names of abducted pupils and teachers. According to images shared online, the names of those still being held captive appeared in white lettering, while the names of victims who reportedly lost their lives during the ordeal were written in red.

On the front, the singer paired the jacket with a white T-shirt boldly branded with the word “NIGERIA.” On the back of the jacket was a simple but powerful message: “BRING THEM HOME.”

The statement transformed what would ordinarily have been a fashion choice into a public advocacy campaign watched by millions of fans across different continents.

Moments before taking the stage, Davido spoke emotionally about the tragedy and called for urgent intervention from authorities.

“Peace and love everywhere. May God be with the families of the abducted and the ones who have been killed,” he said.

“They still haven’t been rescued. We’re praying to God every day. We’re also praying to God that the government hastens. My country is going through a lot. We represent everywhere we go.”

His remarks come amid growing concerns over recurring cases of school kidnappings and insecurity in parts of Nigeria, particularly attacks targeting students and educational institutions.

Over the years, mass abductions have triggered national outrage and international concern, prompting repeated calls for stronger security measures and faster rescue operations. Rights groups and education advocates have consistently warned that such incidents threaten access to education and deepen fears among parents and communities.

Davido’s intervention marks one of the most visible efforts by a Nigerian entertainer to draw global attention to an ongoing security issue using a major international event.

The World Cup countdown concert serves as a flagship promotional event ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The singer’s appearance at the event further reinforces his growing role as one of Africa’s most influential cultural ambassadors. Organisers had earlier confirmed Davido as one of the headline performers for the concert, placing him at the centre of celebrations leading to the tournament.

The performance also comes shortly after FIFA unveiled the official 2026 World Cup soundtrack project, featuring Davido alongside fellow Nigerian music stars Burna Boy, Rema and Ayra Starr.

For many Nigerians following the event online, however, the most memorable moment was not the music but the message emblazoned across Davido’s jacket—a reminder that behind the glamour of a global sporting spectacle, families in Oyo State are still waiting for their loved ones to return home.
