With just days to the Ekiti State governorship election, the European Union and a coalition of prominent civil society organisations have unveiled a Joint Election Observation Hub designed to provide real-time monitoring, independent verification of incidents and credible information throughout the electoral process.

The initiative, established under the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme, is expected to deploy accredited observers across all 16 local government areas of Ekiti State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election scheduled for June 20, 2026.

According to a statement issued by the EU delegation and participating organisations, the hub will serve as a central coordination platform for receiving, verifying and analysing reports from observers stationed at polling units across the state.

The coalition comprises Yiaga Africa, the International Press Centre, the Centre for Media and Society, TAF Africa, The Kukah Centre and the Nigerian Women Trust Fund.

The organisations said the observation exercise would focus on critical stages of the election, including the opening of polling units, voter accreditation, voting, vote counting, results collation, media coverage, electoral integrity and compliance with electoral guidelines.

Special attention will also be given to the participation of women, youths and persons with disabilities, reflecting growing calls for more inclusive elections across Nigeria.

“Verified information from the field will be analysed in real time and shared through periodic public updates to promote transparency, counter misinformation, strengthen public confidence and encourage peaceful participation before, during and after the election,” the coalition said.

The groups noted that the initiative demonstrates the capacity of Nigerian civil society organisations to work together in safeguarding democratic processes.

“The Joint Election Observation Hub reflects the strength of Nigerian civil society working together in the public interest. By bringing together our expertise, nationwide networks and election observation efforts, we are able to provide timely, credible and evidence-based information that strengthens transparency, supports peaceful participation and reinforces public confidence in the electoral process.”

The organisations also urged citizens, political parties, security agencies, the media and electoral officials to uphold the integrity of the election and reject violence, misinformation and other actions capable of undermining the democratic process.

Speaking on the development, Governance Adviser at the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Laolu Olawumi, said the EU remained committed to supporting democratic governance through locally driven initiatives.

“The European Union is proud to support initiatives that place Nigerian organisations at the forefront of strengthening democracy,” he said.

The Ekiti governorship election is one of Nigeria’s most closely watched off-cycle polls and is widely viewed as a political test ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts say the outcome could provide early indications of voter sentiment in the South-West and the broader national political landscape.

The election will also test the effectiveness of electoral technologies such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the INEC Result Viewing Portal, both of which remain central to efforts aimed at improving transparency and public trust in elections.

As campaigns wind down and preparations enter their final stage, stakeholders say the success of the election will depend not only on INEC’s readiness but also on the collective commitment of political actors, voters and observers to a peaceful and credible process.
