Croatia breathed new life into their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on Tuesday night after defeating Panama 1-0 in a tense Group L contest, a result that kept the Europeans in contention for the knockout stage while ending the Central Americans’ hopes of progression.

With England and Ghana having earlier settled for a goalless draw, both teams entered the match knowing only a victory would keep their Round of 32 ambitions alive.

Panama held their own throughout a closely contested first half, frustrating Croatia with disciplined defending and quick counterattacks.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 54th minute when substitute Ante Budimir, introduced after the restart, converted Josip Stanišić’s inviting cross from close range to score what proved to be the match-winning goal.

The victory handed Croatia their first three points of the tournament after losing 4-2 to England in their opening fixture, while Panama suffered a second straight 1-0 defeat and bowed out of the competition with one group game remaining.

The match was also memorable for Croatia captain Luka Modrić, who celebrated his 200th appearance for the national team, becoming one of only a handful of players to reach the milestone in international men’s football.

Panama pushed hard for an equaliser and created several promising chances, but Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livaković produced a string of crucial saves to preserve his side’s narrow lead.

After the game, Panama coach Thomas Christiansen said he was proud of his players despite the elimination, insisting their performances against stronger opposition had shown how much the team had progressed.

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić, however, acknowledged that his side must improve if they are to advance beyond the group stage, describing the win as hard-earned.

Croatia will now face Ghana in a decisive final Group L encounter, while Panama wrap up their World Cup campaign against England.
