Team Nigeria will chase at least four athletics medals on Tuesday at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after an encouraging opening day that saw the country’s sprinters and field athletes secure qualification for key medal events.

The Nigerian contingent heads into another busy day of competition with strong representation in both track and field disciplines, raising hopes of adding to the country’s medal haul at the Games.

Leading the charge in the men’s 100 metres is reigning national champion Favour Ashe, who comfortably booked a place in the semi-finals after producing one of the standout performances in Monday’s heats. Ashe crossed the finish line in 10.10 seconds despite easing off in the closing metres, finishing ahead of Kenya’s Meshack Babu, who clocked 10.21 seconds.

Joining Ashe in the semi-finals are Nigerian record holder Kayinsola Ajayi and Fakorede Adekalu, giving Nigeria three representatives in one of the competition’s most anticipated sprint events.

The women’s 100 metres has also produced encouraging signs for Team Nigeria.

African Under-20 champion Miracle Ezechukwu announced herself on the Commonwealth stage by winning her heat from lane eight in 11.32 seconds. She finished ahead of Barbados’ Kishawna Niles and Ghana’s Deborah Acheampong to secure automatic qualification for the semi-finals.

Ezechukwu will be joined by Blessing Ogundiran and experienced sprinter Rosemary Chukwuma, ensuring Nigeria has three athletes competing for places in the women’s 100m final.

Attention will also turn to the field events, where Nigeria has realistic medal ambitions.

High jumper Temitope Adeshina is scheduled to contest the women’s high jump final against 11 other competitors after maintaining her consistent form this season.

Another medal opportunity comes in the women’s hammer throw, where Sade Olatoye advanced after recording a best throw of 62.75 metres during qualification. Her effort placed her 10th in Group A but comfortably secured one of the places in Tuesday’s final.

Nigeria’s encouraging start reflects the country’s renewed strength in sprinting and field events, particularly following several impressive performances by its athletes in international competitions over the past year.

The Commonwealth Games athletics programme remains one of the most competitive events on the sporting calendar, bringing together elite athletes from across the Commonwealth. For Nigeria, the sprint events have historically produced some of the country’s biggest successes, while recent progress in field events has broadened its medal prospects.

With the semi-finals and finals scheduled throughout Tuesday, Nigerian supporters will be watching closely as Ashe, Ajayi, Adekalu, Ezechukwu, Ogundiran, Chukwuma, Adeshina and Olatoye attempt to convert impressive qualifying performances into podium finishes.

The outcome of the day’s competition could significantly boost Team Nigeria’s overall standing in the athletics medal table as the Glasgow Games gather momentum.
