Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) retained the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg, Austria, with Désiré Doué scoring the decisive second-half goal.

The victory gave PSG successive Super Cup titles after their 2025 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur and made them only the third club to retain the trophy in consecutive editions, following Real Madrid and AC Milan.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put the Champions League holders ahead after 20 minutes before Aston Villa responded through 17-year-old Brian Madjo shortly before half-time.

Madjo’s equaliser added another remarkable chapter to the teenager’s breakthrough campaign, as he became the youngest scorer in UEFA Super Cup history.

Villa refused to be intimidated by PSG’s European pedigree and continued to threaten after the restart.

But PSG regained control when Doué found the net in the 61st minute.

The winger raced into the Villa area and curled the ball past goalkeeper Marco Bizot. The assistant referee initially ruled the goal out for offside, but VAR intervened and confirmed that Villa defender Matty Cash had played Doué onside.

The goal gave PSG the lead for a second time and ultimately proved enough to secure another European trophy.

Luis Enrique had named a strong starting line-up, with several players from the side that lifted last season’s Champions League trophy featuring from the beginning.

Villa manager Unai Emery also fielded a competitive team but rested some established players and handed opportunities to younger members of his squad, including Madjo.

The teenager had already threatened before his equaliser, missing chances before John McGinn picked him out inside the area in the 45th minute. Madjo made no mistake with his next opportunity, firing into the roof of the PSG net.

PSG responded at the interval by bringing on Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé.

Villa, however, continued to ask questions of the French defence. McGinn came close with a curling effort after the break, while George Hemmings also tested PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.

Doué’s goal changed the complexion of the contest again.

Villa pushed for another equaliser in the closing stages, but PSG’s defence held firm as Enrique’s team protected their advantage.

The final also marked the first major UEFA club final staged at Stadion Salzburg and was the 14th venue to host the Super Cup since the competition moved away from its long-standing home in Monaco.

The match was officiated by Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who became the first Somali to referee a UEFA men’s club final.

For Villa, the result was a frustrating end to an encouraging performance against Europe’s reigning champions.

For PSG, it was another trophy added to a rapidly growing collection under Enrique.

The French side now begin the new season with silverware already secured and another reminder of their ability to deliver on Europe’s biggest stages.
