Commissioner of Police Ajao Adewale has assumed duty as the 39th Commissioner of Police of the Bayelsa State Command.

Adewale took over the leadership of the command on Wednesday from Iyamah Edebor, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

The development was announced in a statement issued by the Bayelsa Police Command spokesperson, SP Musa Muhammad, in Yenagoa.

According to the command, Adewale was transferred to Bayelsa after serving as Commissioner of Police, Administration, at the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Gombe State.

He also previously served as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Adewale is a seasoned police officer with experience in police operations, administration and criminal investigation.

He has served in several commands, formations and units of the Nigeria Police Force during his career.

His previous posting to the FCT gave him experience leading one of the country’s most strategically important police commands.

Adewale assumed office in the FCT in March 2025 as the 33rd Commissioner of Police, taking over from Olatunji Disu after Disu’s elevation and redeployment. He was later moved from the FCT in October 2025 for another strategic assignment.

His latest posting to Bayelsa comes after Edebor’s elevation to AIG, creating a new leadership chapter for the state command.

The new commissioner is expected to focus on strengthening security operations, intelligence gathering and cooperation between the police and communities across Bayelsa.

The command also urged residents to support the new police leadership as he begins work.

“The command urges the people of the state to accord the new Commissioner of Police the necessary support to deliver on his task of maintaining peace, law and order,” Muhammad said.

Adewale is also expected to engage traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, government officials and other security agencies as part of efforts to strengthen security coordination across the state.

His experience in both operational and administrative policing is expected to shape his approach as he takes charge of the command.

The Bayelsa Police Command said the new CP would work with stakeholders to maintain peace and ensure the safety of residents and property.
