The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Nigerians to allow the police to determine whether comments attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi during an APC campaign rally in Ilesa were unlawful, as controversy over the remarks continues ahead of Saturday’s Osun governorship election.
APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said it was not the responsibility of political parties or individuals to determine whether the senator’s comments constituted an offence.
Morka spoke on Arise News on Wednesday, shortly after Fadahunsi reported to the Osun State Police Command for questioning over a viral campaign video.
“I don’t think it’s for any of us, you know, yourself, myself, you know, even the party, to be second-guessing what was said or didn’t say. That is the job of the police,” Morka said.
Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, was invited after a video circulated in which he was widely interpreted as urging APC supporters to “kill” members of the rival Accord Party.
The senator has since maintained that the video was edited and that his reference to “killing” Accord members was a metaphor for defeating the party at the ballot box.
Morka said the police should establish the context of the senator’s remarks and determine whether they breached any law.
“I understand, you know, he’s been invited to explain his comments. So I think we must wait for the police to do their job and properly put his statements in context,” he said.
Fadahunsi arrived at the Osun Police Command headquarters in Osogbo on Wednesday afternoon and was questioned by investigators.
He was later released after the interrogation, although the police did not immediately disclose details of the investigation.
The controversy comes as political tension remains high ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
Morka also condemned violence reported across the state, saying political participation should not expose citizens to attacks or death.
“The events unfolding in Osun, the level of violence, is disturbing on so many levels,” he said.
He urged the police and other security agencies to investigate those responsible for violent incidents and bring them to justice.
“We at the APC, we totally condemn all of the acts of violence that we’ve witnessed in Osun in the lead-up to this election,” Morka said.
According to the APC spokesman, the party has no reason to resort to violence because it is confident that voters will judge it based on its record.
“We, as a party, don’t participate in violence because we are confident about our case,” he said.
The position comes after human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong called for Fadahunsi’s prosecution, arguing that the senator’s alleged comments could heighten tensions and intimidate voters ahead of the election.
Effiong also criticised the police for releasing the senator after questioning.
Fadahunsi, however, has maintained that his comments were taken out of context and did not amount to a call for physical violence.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the Osun governorship election for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
With the poll only days away, the Fadahunsi controversy has intensified calls for political parties and their supporters to avoid inflammatory rhetoric while security agencies face pressure to demonstrate impartiality.
The immediate question is now whether the police will take further action after completing their assessment of the senator’s comments.
