A three-storey hospital building identified as UNICEM Hospital has collapsed in Calabar, Cross River State, after the ground beneath the structure was reportedly washed away by heavy rainfall and erosion.
A video circulating on social media on Friday captured the building gradually giving way before crashing into a deep gully.
The incident was reportedly recorded on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
A Calabar-based pharmacist who shared the video, identified as Mr Mekzy, said the collapse occurred on Thursday.
However, there was no immediate official statement from the Cross River State Government confirming the incident, its cause or whether there were casualties as of the time of filing this report.
The absence of an official casualty figure means claims about injuries or deaths could not be independently confirmed.
The facility has been identified as UNICEM Hospital, a healthcare facility in Calabar.
The latest collapse comes amid a worrying series of landslides and flood-related disasters in the Cross River State capital.
In July, five people, including four siblings, were killed after a landslide struck Ikot Anwatim in Calabar Municipality following hours of heavy rainfall.
Days later, another landslide in the Borrow Pit area of Edim Otop reportedly killed an eight-year-old girl when a building collapsed under the force of the sliding earth.
The incidents have heightened concerns over the impact of persistent rainfall, erosion and development around vulnerable slopes and drainage channels in Calabar.
Emergency authorities have already carried out assessments of several affected communities.
The National Emergency Management Agency, Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, Nigerian Red Cross Society and local emergency committees conducted a joint assessment of flood- and landslide-hit communities in Calabar in July.
The exercise followed several incidents that damaged homes and displaced residents, with officials warning people living in disaster-prone locations to report emerging threats and move away from unsafe structures when necessary.
The Cross River State Government has also provided financial assistance to families affected by the earlier disasters and pledged to strengthen flood mitigation and emergency response measures.
The collapse of the UNICEM building has now renewed calls for urgent action on erosion control and the inspection of structures located close to unstable terrain.
Reacting to the video, social media users expressed concern about the safety of people who may have been inside the building when it collapsed.
One user, identified as #Dacolls1, described the recurring landslides in Calabar as an environmental crisis and called for professional investigations and stronger erosion control.
Another user, #okafor_nna54, questioned whether anyone was inside the building and urged authorities to respond whenever structures begin showing signs of distress.
A third user raised questions about construction standards and called for accountability where structural failures are linked to poor workmanship.
As attention turns to the incident, residents will be watching for an official assessment of the collapsed building, confirmation of any casualties and details of measures to protect neighbouring structures from further erosion or landslide damage.
