The remains of Uganda’s late Tooro King, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, have arrived in the country ahead of his burial on September 12, bringing his 31-year reign to a solemn close.

King Oyo, recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch after ascending the throne at three, died in the United States on August 27, 2026, aged 34.

His remains arrived at Entebbe International Airport on Friday, where President Yoweri Museveni received and paid his respects.

The body was then flown by Uganda People’s Defence Forces helicopter to Kyegegwa before continuing by road to Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, the seat of the Tooro Kingdom.

The Ugandan government has taken charge of the funeral arrangements following a directive from President Museveni, with State House covering major expenses connected to the king’s final rites.

The arrival of the remains marks the beginning of nine days of official mourning, during which the body will lie in state at Karuziika Palace.

Members of the public, cultural delegations and government officials are expected to pay their final respects, while prayers will be held each evening throughout the mourning period.

The burial on September 12 will carry special significance for the Tooro Kingdom because it falls exactly 31 years after King Oyo ascended the throne.

Oyo became Omukama of Tooro on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father, Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.

He was only three years old at the time, making his accession one of the most unusual royal successions in modern history. He was formally crowned after reaching adulthood in 2010.

The final funeral service will be held at St John’s Cathedral before the body is taken in a traditional procession to the Karambi Royal Tombs for burial.

The church service is expected to end at noon, with the burial completed by 2pm. Tooro customs prohibit the burial of kings in the evening.

The funeral preparations have, however, coincided with an emerging succession question within the kingdom.

Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki has said the late king left behind a young son whose identity would be revealed in accordance with Tooro customs.

President Yoweri Museveni has also said Queen Mother Best Kemigisa informed him that her son had left an heir.

But Charles Kamurasi, head of the Babiito royal clan from which Tooro kings are traditionally chosen, has said he was unaware of the reported child.

The disagreement has raised questions over how the succession process will proceed after King Oyo’s burial.

The Tooro Kingdom has appealed for restraint as elders and royal leaders work through the issue.

Rwomiire has urged those involved to avoid public statements that could deepen divisions during a period of mourning.

King Oyo’s death ends a remarkable reign that began when he was a toddler and continued for nearly 31 years.

During his time on the throne, he became known for promoting youth empowerment, education, healthcare, environmental conservation and tourism.

Although Uganda’s traditional kingdoms have no formal political authority, the Tooro monarchy remains an important cultural institution with influence across western Uganda.

King Oyo’s burial will therefore serve as both a farewell to a monarch who became internationally known from childhood and the opening of a new chapter for one of Uganda’s historic kingdoms.

September 12, once associated with the anniversary of his accession, will now become the day Tooro lays its late king to rest.
