The Premier League summer transfer window is entering its decisive phase, with clubs facing the September 1 deadline to complete their final signings, departures and squad adjustments ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The window opened on June 15 and will close at 11pm BST on Tuesday, September 1, leaving clubs with just over three weeks to finalise their squads.
Arsenal have already made one of the biggest statements of the summer by signing Brazil international Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United for £75m.
The 28-year-old midfielder has agreed a four-year contract with an option for another season, strengthening the reigning champions ahead of their title defence.
Guimarães’ departure is also part of a major reshaping at Newcastle, who have seen several important players leave during the window. The Magpies have responded by recruiting goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga and midfielder Aladji Bamba from Monaco, among other additions.
Chelsea have been even more aggressive in the market.
The London club completed the £117m signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, making him the most expensive British player in history. Rogers signed a seven-year contract and became one of the centrepieces of new manager Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Manchester City had earlier set the British transfer record with the £116m acquisition of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.
The spending has not been restricted to the established title contenders.
Bournemouth have strengthened their defence with Portugal international Antonio Silva, while Leeds United have brought in goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City in a club-record £40m deal.
Tottenham have also invested heavily, signing Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali for £100m and Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke for a reported £52m. Former Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has also joined Spurs on a free transfer.
Elsewhere, Fulham have recruited from Real Madrid, while Everton, Crystal Palace and Brentford have all continued to strengthen their squads.
The promoted clubs are also refusing to wait until the final days of the window.
Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town are rebuilding for their return to the top flight, with the trio confirmed as the promoted clubs for the 2026/27 campaign.
The new Premier League season begins on August 21, when Arsenal host Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium. That means clubs will have begun their league campaigns before the transfer window eventually shuts on September 1.
The compressed timeline could make the closing weeks particularly frantic.
Managers will have to balance early-season results with the need to address weaknesses identified during pre-season, while sporting directors will continue negotiations over potential arrivals and departures.
For clubs competing in Europe, squad depth will be even more important as domestic and continental fixtures begin to pile up.
