Barcelona have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign England international Anthony Gordon in a deal worth more than £69 million, ending weeks of speculation surrounding the winger’s future.

British media reports say Barcelona agreed a fee of about €80 million (£69.3m) inclusive of add-ons for the 25-year-old attacker, who has already completed his medical in Spain ahead of a formal unveiling.

Gordon is expected to sign a five-year contract with the LaLiga champions before linking up with the England squad for their World Cup training camp in Florida.

The move represents one of the biggest transfers of the summer window and becomes Newcastle’s second-most expensive sale after the £125 million departure of Alexander Isak to Liverpool last year.

Barcelona reportedly accelerated talks after interest from Bayern Munich cooled in recent days. The Bundesliga champions had explored a possible deal but were unable to meet Newcastle’s valuation.

Newcastle executives had publicly hinted that major sales could be necessary as the club seeks financial flexibility following a disappointing 12th-place Premier League finish.

Chief executive David Hopkinson earlier admitted the club could need to “sell to buy” during the summer rebuild, with Gordon emerging as the most likely high-profile exit.

The England winger was notably left unused in Newcastle’s final four matches of the season, fuelling speculation that the club was protecting him ahead of an anticipated transfer.

Supporters at Craven Cottage reportedly sang Gordon’s name following Newcastle’s final-day defeat to Fulham, in what many fans now view as his farewell moment at St James’ Park.

Gordon leaves Newcastle after an impressive campaign in which he scored 17 goals across competitions and delivered standout performances in the UEFA Champions League.

His European displays particularly attracted attention across the continent, with only Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane scoring more Champions League goals than him this season.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is believed to value Gordon’s versatility, pace and ability to operate across multiple attacking positions.

Though primarily deployed on the left wing, Gordon has also played centrally with notable success — a quality that may become increasingly important as veteran striker Robert Lewandowski enters the latter stages of his Barcelona career.

The arrival of Gordon could also complicate the future of Marcus Rashford, who reportedly wants to remain at Barcelona after his loan spell from Manchester United.

Part of Gordon’s transfer fee will also benefit Everton, who inserted a 15 per cent sell-on clause when Newcastle signed the winger from his boyhood club in 2023.

For Barcelona, the signing signals another major statement under Flick as the Catalan side continue rebuilding a younger, high-intensity attack around stars like Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.
