Nigeria’s Super Falcons players have received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each, while members of the team’s technical crew and officials have been paid $50,000 each, completing the outstanding cash component of President Bola Tinubu’s reward package for their 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations victory.
The National Sports Commission announced the development on Monday, November 2, saying the Federal Government had fulfilled the President’s financial commitment to the team following their record-extending 10th continental title.
The payment brings to completion the major components of the presidential reward package, which included cash incentives, three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger.
The NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, commended Tinubu for fulfilling the promise, describing the payment as an important recognition of the players’ contribution to Nigerian sports.
“The Super Falcons made Nigeria proud, and Mr President has honoured his commitment to them in full. This means a great deal to the team and to Nigerian sports. We sincerely thank Mr President for recognising their achievement and directing that they received everything promised to them in record time,” Dikko said.
The commission attributed the completion of the payments to collaboration between the NSC and the Ministries of Finance, Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, and Housing and Urban Development.
Dikko said the fulfilment of the reward package was significant against the background of previous complaints by Nigerian athletes over delays in receiving incentives and benefits promised by successive administrations.
“Some of our sports heroes endured years of waiting for promises to be fulfilled. President Tinubu has shown that things can be done differently,” he said.
“Our athletes can take encouragement from this and prepare to represent Nigeria with confidence that their efforts are appreciated and commitments made to them will be honoured.”
Tinubu announced the rewards on July 28, 2025, when he hosted the victorious team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
At the reception, the President approved the naira equivalent of $100,000 for each of the 24 players and $50,000 for each member of the technical team. He also conferred the OON national honour on the players and officials and directed the allocation of three-bedroom apartments to them under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.
The Super Falcons had secured the title two days earlier, on July 26, 2025, after producing a remarkable comeback against hosts Morocco in the final in Rabat.
Nigeria recovered from a two-goal deficit to win 3-2, with Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi and Jennifer Echegini scoring to deliver the country’s 10th WAFCON crown.
The cash payment follows the earlier presentation of the players’ housing documents and OON certificates during the 2026 WAFCON tournament in Morocco. In September, the NSC confirmed that the Falcons were still awaiting the cash component, with the commission saying the payments would be made before their next official engagements.
The development also follows the Federal Government’s payment of the same cash rewards to Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, after their fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket title in 2025.
The NSC confirmed in September 2026 that each D’Tigress player had received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while officials received $50,000 each. The basketball team had also received three-bedroom apartment documents and OON certificates earlier in the year.
The Federal Government had also presented housing documents and national honours to members of the Super Eagles following their silver-medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
With the latest payment, the NSC says the financial commitment to the Super Falcons has now been fulfilled, completing the reward package announced after their historic triumph.
