Nigerian music star Niniola Apata has paid a moving tribute to her late husband, Michael Ndika, describing him as the driving force behind her successful career and the person who refused to let her abandon music when she considered stepping away from the industry.

The emotional remarks were made during activities held in honour of Ndika, whose death was announced recently by the Grammy-nominated singer. A video from the event, which circulated widely on social media on Friday, captured Niniola fighting back tears as she reflected on their 13-year marriage and the role her husband played in both her personal and professional life.

Ndika, who was the Chief Executive Officer of NaijaReview, died on May 19, 2026, at the age of 44. His death sparked widespread reactions across Nigeria’s entertainment industry, particularly after many fans discovered for the first time that Niniola had been privately married for over a decade.

Speaking before family members, friends and supporters, the afro-house singer described their relationship as a love story built on sacrifice, support and unwavering belief.

“My story with Michael is a love story. Michael did everything for me. Everything was for me, he was breathing for me. He loved me, I loved him so much. And I learned so much from Michael,” she said.

Niniola revealed that when they first met, she was still trying to find her footing in the music industry and was naturally reserved, but Ndika saw potential in her long before she became a household name.

According to her, he constantly reassured her that she would achieve greatness and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help her build a successful music career.

“But Michael met me raw, and he said, ‘I’ll make you a superstar.’ And he did. I was just the face and the voice, but Michael was the engine,” she said.

One of the most emotional moments during her tribute came when she disclosed that she had once considered taking a break from music but that her husband strongly encouraged her to continue.

“Even when I decided to, you know, give music a break, he didn’t let it,” she said.

Niniola also spoke about the deep void left by his passing, describing him as the first person she saw every morning and the last person she spoke to every night.

“The first person I saw in the morning was Michael. And the last person who closed my eyes at night was Michael. So now what do I do? Tell me, what do I do? Michael was the best thing, the best person that ever happened to me,” she said.

The singer thanked members of the Ndika family for embracing her throughout the years and acknowledged the shock that followed the public announcement of his death.

She also apologised to individuals who felt surprised or hurt by the circumstances surrounding the disclosure, noting that the family had been dealing with a difficult period of grief.

The tribute has generated an outpouring of condolences from fans, colleagues and industry stakeholders, many of whom praised the couple’s commitment to privacy while celebrating the impact Ndika had on Niniola’s journey.

As tributes continue to pour in, the singer’s emotional testimony has offered fans a rare glimpse into the personal story behind one of Nigeria’s most successful female music careers.
