The Anambra State Police Command has arrested the landlord of a 23-year-old nursing student found dead in her apartment in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area, as detectives intensify investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The deceased, identified as Chiamaka Chilaka, was an ND II student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor, and hailed from Isingu in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State. She was reportedly found lifeless in her residence at Uruezeani, Alor, after church service on Sunday.

The incident has triggered widespread reactions on social media after a viral video showed a cleric wailing beside the student’s body, repeatedly crying, “My daughter, my daughter.”

Social media posts also alleged that the deceased had repeatedly rejected alleged sexual advances from her landlord and that both had recently been involved in an altercation. However, the police have yet to establish those claims and say investigations are still ongoing.

Confirming the development on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, had directed detectives to carry out a full-scale investigation after the case was transferred from the Nnobi Divisional Police Headquarters to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka.

Ikenga said officers who visited the scene observed visible injuries on the victim, including a deep cut on her thigh, other marks of violence, and blood stains, raising strong suspicion of foul play.

He added that the student’s body had been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the landlord had been taken into custody and was being interrogated as part of the investigation.

The police assured residents that no effort would be spared in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the student’s death, promising that anyone found responsible would be prosecuted. The command also appealed to members of the public with useful information to assist the ongoing investigation.
