Bayo Adelabu and the Politics of Loyalty

Ajiboye Sangogade’s movement to APM has triggered fresh questions about Adelabu’s political camp ahead of 2027.

Politics, that masquerade that rarely dances the same step twice, has produced another intriguing turn in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections.

Bayo Adelabu, the former Minister of Power and one of the politicians who sought the All Progressives Congress governorship ticket in Oyo State, is again at the centre of political conversations after a prominent member of his political camp moved into the Allied Peoples Movement.

Ajiboye Sangogade, popularly known as Boye Nation, was identified as Adelabu’s former Personal Assistant and loyalist. On Monday, Sangogade led supporters into the APM during a Boye Nation/JAF Movement Mega Concert at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan.

Governor Seyi Makinde received the defectors and used the occasion to campaign for the APM ahead of the 2027 elections.

And this is where the political question becomes interesting.

Can the movement of an aide and supporters be read as a movement by Adelabu himself?

Not necessarily.

Adelabu had been among those who sought the APC governorship ticket before Senator Sharafadeen Alli emerged as the party’s candidate.

But in August, the former minister announced that he would not pursue an internal appeal or legal challenge over the primary. Instead, he called for reconciliation within the party.

That history is important.

The latest defection establishes that Sangogade and a group of supporters have moved to the APM. It does not, by itself, establish that Adelabu authorised the move or has abandoned the APC.

That distinction matters in a political environment where association can easily become assumption.

Still, the optics are significant.

A prominent aide of a former minister leading supporters away from the party in which his principal has been politically active will naturally generate questions about loyalty, political strategy and the future direction of the camp.

But questions are not conclusions.

Makinde has embraced the development and presented the defection as evidence of growing support for his party. He also challenged APC governorship candidate Sharafadeen Alli to focus on the APM candidate, Bimbo Adekanmbi, rather than his administration.

For Adelabu, the situation creates an interesting political equation.

He has contested for the APC ticket, expressed grievances about the primary, stepped back from legal action and called for reconciliation. Now, someone closely associated with his political structure has joined a rival platform.

Whether that represents an isolated political decision by Sangogade or a wider realignment involving Adelabu’s supporters remains to be seen.

There is also a wider lesson.

Nigeria’s political landscape is full of relationships that survive one election cycle and disappear in another. A political aide can move independently. Supporters can change platforms. Former allies can become opponents, while yesterday’s opponents can become tomorrow’s partners.

That is why the evidence matters.

The available facts establish Sangogade’s defection. They establish his previous association with Adelabu. They establish Adelabu’s earlier dispute with the APC over its Oyo governorship primary and his subsequent call for reconciliation.

They do not establish that Adelabu personally ordered the defection or has declared against the APC.

As the 2027 contest gathers momentum, the real question will be whether the movement of Sangogade and his supporters remains an isolated realignment or develops into a broader political shift.

For now, the defection is a fact.

Its larger political meaning remains open to interpretation.
