The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has demanded the identity of a United States laboratory expected to conduct a DNA examination to establish whether Liam is the biological son of the deceased musician.

The family also requested the postponement of the examination scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the Mainland General Hospital/IDH, Yaba, Lagos, citing concerns about transparency, sample handling and compliance with a subsisting court order.

The demands were contained in a statement signed by the family head, Samuel Aloba, and sent to PUNCH Metro on Thursday.

According to the family, it is seeking clarification on whether the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, reportedly designated by a court order dated May 5, 2026, will conduct the examination or simply collect biological samples before transferring them to a laboratory in the United States for analysis.

The family argued that the distinction was important, insisting that any departure from the arrangement contemplated by the court should be properly explained and, where necessary, submitted for judicial clarification.

It therefore demanded the full name and address of the proposed American laboratory, evidence of its accreditation and technical competence, as well as details of the procedures for collecting, labelling, preserving, transporting and examining the samples.

The family also requested a verifiable chain-of-custody mechanism to establish that samples collected in Lagos would be the same specimens received and analysed by the overseas laboratory.

In the statement, the family expressed reservations about the reported decision to disclose the laboratory’s identity only to the court, arguing that confidentiality should not undermine transparency and accountability.

It said its position was not intended to frustrate the judicial process or prevent the DNA examination but to ensure that the eventual findings would be scientifically credible and capable of independent verification.

The family also raised concerns about the handling of biological specimens during the post-mortem examination conducted following Mohbad’s death.

It questioned the role of the pathologist involved in collecting samples during the coroner’s inquest and claimed that enquiries suggested the laboratory expected to receive specimens from the earlier process had not received any sample registered in Mohbad’s name.

However, the family emphasised that the allegations represented information obtained from its enquiries and were not established findings of a court or independently verified evidence of wrongdoing.

It maintained that the proposed DNA examination must have adequate safeguards against possible interference, mishandling or manipulation.

The family consequently appealed to the relevant authorities to address its concerns, provide the requested information and ensure that the exercise complied with the court’s directives and accepted forensic procedures.

It also requested adequate notice for all parties and their legal representatives, alongside further judicial directions where necessary, before the examination proceeds.

The latest development comes amid a prolonged legal dispute over Liam’s paternity following Mohbad’s death.

In September 2025, a Magistrate Court sitting in Ikorodu, Lagos, ordered DNA examinations to establish the child’s paternity, directing that testing be conducted at recognised and accredited medical facilities and that both parties or their representatives be present during sample collection.

In February 2026, another development in the proceedings saw the court approve three independent DNA examinations involving facilities in Nigeria and abroad, following complications surrounding earlier arrangements.

More recently, proceedings relating to Liam’s DNA dispute were reported to have been adjourned until November 16, 2026, following objections raised by the Aloba family over the proposed testing arrangements.

Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. Following his death, the Lagos State Police Command established a 13-member special investigation team to investigate the circumstances surrounding his passing.

The family maintains that establishing Liam’s paternity through a transparent and scientifically reliable process remains essential to resolving the dispute.
