Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that individuals financing terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes across Nigeria will eventually be exposed, urging citizens not to lose hope despite the country’s ongoing security challenges.
Speaking during an interdenominational church service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja to mark Democracy Day, Akpabio said prayer, resilience and collective action remain vital in confronting insecurity and preserving national unity.
The event, themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” attracted senior government officials, religious leaders and worshippers who gathered to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Recalling his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio said he introduced monthly prayer sessions during a period marked by militancy, kidnappings and violent crimes.
“When I had the opportunity to serve as governor about 19 years ago, I started monthly prayer,” he said.
“Today I want you to ask the same question. With the things happening around us, what if we were not praying? We must continue praying so that evil doers and their sponsors shall be exposed.”
He stressed that those sponsoring insecurity would eventually be identified regardless of their position or influence.
The Senate President acknowledged the devastating impact of insecurity on communities across the country, noting that many farmers remain afraid to return to their fields while travellers continue to move with uncertainty.
He also expressed concern about the plight of abducted children and families affected by violent attacks, describing their suffering as a tragedy that continues to challenge the nation’s conscience.
Despite the difficulties, Akpabio maintained that Nigeria possesses the resilience needed to overcome current security threats.
According to him, the country has survived political crises, economic difficulties and public health emergencies in the past and will overcome insurgency and violent criminality.
He added that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to restoring peace, defeating criminal elements and ensuring the safe return of citizens held in captivity.
Also speaking during the service, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the Federal Government was intensifying efforts to address economic challenges while strengthening measures aimed at improving security nationwide.
The Democracy Day celebration comes amid renewed calls for stronger action against insecurity and greater protection for vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
