The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has urged Sunday Igboho’s Iru Ekun Security Network to strengthen cooperation with security agencies and notify the police before carrying out security-related activities.
Sanusi gave the directive on Saturday during a meeting with the outfit’s FCT coordinator, Segun Olufadeju, popularly known as Aluwaye, and members of his team at his office in Abuja.
According to a statement issued by Igboho’s media office, the police commissioner said collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services and other security agencies was essential to effective community policing and crime prevention.
He commended the security outfit but stressed the need to inform relevant security agencies, particularly divisional police authorities within their jurisdictions, about crime prevention and detection activities before taking action.
The meeting was described as part of efforts to strengthen coordination between the police and the security network in tackling crime and promoting peace.
Igboho, the founder of the Iru Ekun Security Network, subsequently commended the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, for what he described as support for the outfit.
In the statement, the activist said cooperation with security agencies had contributed to the group’s reported efforts to address abduction, banditry and farmer-herder clashes.
“We are always ready to partner with relevant stakeholders in the security sector in further driving peace, protecting communities against hoodlums and other criminals posing a threat to our people, most especially law-abiding Nigerians in the South West,” he said.
Igboho also named the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; and Director-General of the DSS, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, among the officials he said had supported the outfit.
He said the network would continue working with relevant security agencies in the interest of public safety.
The FCT coordinator, Olufadeju, also pledged that the group would inform and engage the police in the territory about its activities.
The meeting underscores the importance of coordination between community-based security initiatives and established law enforcement agencies.
The police commissioner’s reported directive specifically emphasised the need to notify divisional police authorities before undertaking security-related activities, a measure intended to improve communication and coordination in crime prevention.
The statement did not provide independent evidence for the outfit’s claims about its operational achievements.
