Why UK Universities Are Withdrawing Nigerians’ Admission Offers

Stricter British immigration rules are forcing universities to reconsider international recruitment as Nigerian study visa withdrawals rise sharply.

UK universities are withdrawing admission offers to Nigerian students as rising study visa application withdrawals and tougher immigration rules threaten institutions’ ability to recruit international students.

A report by the Financial Times published on Saturday, October 10, 2026, found that 22.7 per cent of UK study visa applications from Nigerians were withdrawn in the first half of 2026, compared with 4.5 per cent during the corresponding period in 2025.

The increase comes as the British government tightens requirements for universities sponsoring international students, exposing institutions to tougher penalties if they fail to meet immigration compliance standards.

Under revised Home Office rules introduced on June 1, 2026, universities must maintain a student visa refusal rate below five per cent, compared with the previous threshold of less than 10 per cent.

Institutions must also achieve an enrolment rate of at least 95 per cent and meet specified course completion requirements. Failure to satisfy the conditions can result in enforcement action, including restrictions on international recruitment or the revocation of a student sponsor licence.

The stricter rules have prompted universities to take a more cautious approach to overseas recruitment, particularly in countries where visa refusals have increased.

According to the FT, universities have increasingly withdrawn admission offers to reduce the risk of exceeding the new refusal threshold.

The newspaper linked the trend partly to a sharp increase in visa refusals by the UK Home Office during the first six months of 2026.

However, withdrawn visa applications are not necessarily rejected applications. The figures include applications removed from the process, including cases in which universities reportedly withdrew admission offers before a final visa decision.

Nigerians among affected international applicants

Nigeria is among several countries whose prospective students have experienced a significant increase in withdrawn UK study visa applications.

The proportion of applications withdrawn by Pakistani applicants rose from three per cent in the first half of 2025 to 40.9 per cent in the corresponding period of 2026.

For Bangladesh, the rate increased from 7.1 per cent to 23.5 per cent, while India’s figure climbed from 1.2 per cent to 5.2 per cent.

Across all nationalities, the withdrawal rate rose to 10.5 per cent in the first half of 2026, compared with 2.3 per cent a year earlier.

The FT also reported that about 15 UK universities were believed to have suspended recruitment from Pakistan entirely this year, highlighting the effects of the stricter immigration compliance environment.

Sir David Bell, vice-chancellor of the University of Sunderland, said the increase in visa refusals had forced institutions to reconsider their recruitment strategies.

“The recent and unexpected spike in visa refusals has prompted pre-emptive action in several universities. This has involved pulling back from international markets where a tougher approach is being taken to visa applications,” he said.

Jamie Arrowsmith, director of Universities UK International, criticised what he described as inconsistent decision-making in the visa process.

“Many refusals appear to rest on flawed, inconsistent and highly subjective reasoning, forcing universities to withdraw offers at scale to avoid breaching compliance thresholds,” he said.

His comments reflect concerns within the higher education sector that universities could lose access to international students because of visa decisions beyond their direct control.

Universities warn of job losses and closures

The situation has raised concerns about the financial future of British universities, many of which rely on international tuition fees to support their operations.

Vanessa Wilson, chief executive of University Alliance, a group representing professional and technical universities, warned that the pressure could force institutions to restructure.

“This is going to result in restructures, which inevitably results in job losses, course closures, campus closures,” she said.

The FT report also highlighted visa refusal cases that university representatives considered questionable.

These included applicants being challenged over previous consideration of studying in other countries and a doctoral applicant being unable to identify course modules that reportedly did not exist for the research degree.

The cases have fuelled concerns about the consistency of the Home Office’s assessment process.

The British government, however, has defended the stricter rules, arguing that institutions must demonstrate responsible recruitment and protect the integrity of the immigration system.

The Home Office said international students make a positive contribution to Britain but maintained that recruitment practices must not undermine immigration controls. It also said it was offering universities support where necessary to improve their recruitment procedures.

For Nigerian students, the changes create additional uncertainty after they have secured university admission. Applicants could face disrupted study plans, financial losses or delays while institutions reassess their offers and sponsorship arrangements.

Prospective students should confirm the status of their admission and student sponsorship directly with their universities before making major financial commitments.
