The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be remembered not only for Spain’s triumph but also for the remarkable number of records rewritten during the tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
From Cristiano Ronaldo extending his legendary scoring record to Kylian Mbappe becoming the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history and Lionel Messi adding several milestones to his remarkable career, the competition produced one of the richest statistical chapters the tournament has ever witnessed.
FIFA released the official list of new records after the final, highlighting achievements by players, coaches, goalkeepers and emerging stars.
Mbappe emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers after scoring 10 goals to finish with 22 World Cup goals, becoming the competition’s all-time leading scorer. The France captain also retained the Golden Boot after finishing as the tournament’s top scorer for a second successive World Cup.
Although Argentina fell short in the final against Spain, Messi strengthened his legendary status by setting three more records. He finished with a record 23 World Cup victories, became the first player to score in nine consecutive World Cup matches and extended his record for the most goals scored from outside the penalty area with seven.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo also made history. At 41, he became the first footballer to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments while finishing as the second-oldest goalscorer in World Cup history.
Spain’s title-winning campaign also produced several team records. Goalkeeper Unai Simón kept seven clean sheets in eight matches, while Spain conceded just one goal throughout the tournament—the fewest ever by a World Cup-winning team.
Midfielder Rodri completed 790 successful passes, breaking his own previous tournament record, while France winger Michael Olise set a new benchmark with seven assists, surpassing Pelé’s long-standing record.
France coach Didier Deschamps became the manager with the most World Cup appearances after reaching 26 matches and also extended his record for the most victories by a coach. Curaçao’s Dick Advocaat entered the history books as the oldest coach to manage at a World Cup at 78 years and 271 days.
Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room matched the World Cup record of 16 saves in a single match, while Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi became the youngest substitute ever to score a brace at the tournament.
England’s Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane became the first teammates to score six goals each in one World Cup edition before France’s Mbappe and Ousmane Dembélé matched the feat later in the competition.
