Former Super Eagles captain Augustine ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha has recalled how his unforgettable solo goal against German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn in 1993 changed the course of his career.

Okocha said the strike for Eintracht Frankfurt against Karlsruher SC was the moment he moved from being a promising young midfielder in Germany to gaining recognition across Europe.

The Nigerian football legend made the revelation while speaking on the Obi-Wan podcast on Monday, recalling the circumstances surrounding one of the most celebrated goals of his career.

“It was Oliver Kahn, and he was having his best season,” Okocha said.

“That goal changed my life. That was when I gained recognition outside Germany.”

The goal came on August 31, 1993, during Eintracht Frankfurt’s Bundesliga meeting with Karlsruher SC at the Waldstadion.

Okocha scored in the 87th minute to complete a 3-1 victory for Frankfurt, producing a moment that would become one of the most replayed highlights of his career.

After receiving the ball inside the penalty area, the 20-year-old repeatedly feinted and changed direction as Kahn and several defenders tried to close him down.

He eventually found the net after an extended solo run that lasted about 11 seconds.

Okocha said the prolonged dribbling was not a deliberate attempt to embarrass Kahn but a consequence of his search for an opening to shoot.

“I didn’t mean to hold onto it that long. Whenever I want to shoot, I see somebody in front, so I was just trying to find the right moment to shoot,” he said.

The Nigerian also recalled the reaction of his then Frankfurt manager, Klaus Toppmöller, who apparently believed the goal had saved Okocha from serious consequences.

“The saving grace was it did go in, because even the manager told me, had he been there, I didn’t score that goal, as long as he remains manager of this team, you will never play again,” he recalled.

The goal went on to achieve a status far beyond the Bundesliga match in which it was scored.

Sportschau viewers later voted it the 1993 Goal of the Year, while Eintracht Frankfurt has repeatedly celebrated the strike as one of the most iconic goals in the club’s history.

Kahn has also acknowledged the brilliance of the moment.

More than two decades after conceding the goal, the former Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper recalled the incident and joked that he was still dizzy from Okocha’s series of feints.

Okocha said he has since met Kahn but has never discussed the famous goal with him.

“I’ve met him, but you don’t want to discuss that. He’s a big lad, and he never smiles,” Okocha joked.

The goal came during the early stage of Okocha’s rise in European football.

He had joined Eintracht Frankfurt in 1992 after beginning his German adventure with Borussia Neunkirchen and quickly attracted attention with his creativity, dribbling ability and unpredictability.

He eventually made 90 Bundesliga appearances for Frankfurt before moving on to Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers.

Okocha went on to become one of Africa’s most celebrated attacking midfielders and a key figure for the Super Eagles.

But for the former Nigeria captain, the 1993 night in Frankfurt remains especially significant.

It was the moment, he says, that changed his life.
