Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have killed a suspected terrorist in Sokoto State and rescued six members of the same family during a separate foiled kidnapping attempt in Zamfara State.
In Sokoto, troops of Sector 2 moved against a suspected terrorist hideout around Karani village in Gudu Local Government Area following intelligence on terrorist activities in the area.
The troops engaged the armed group after making contact, killing one suspected terrorist while others fled into the surrounding forest.
A search of the hideout resulted in the recovery of an AK-47 rifle loaded with live ammunition, an operational motorcycle, military camouflage uniforms, maintenance tools and other logistical supplies.
The spokesman for the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, said the troops responded with “decisive firepower” during the encounter.
He said the operation demonstrated the capability of Operation Fansan Yamma troops to disrupt terrorist activities and deny armed groups freedom of action within the theatre.
Following the encounter, the soldiers launched clearance operations in the surrounding forest to prevent the fleeing terrorists from regrouping.
Osoba said the troops were also working to dominate the wider area and deny the fleeing elements freedom of movement.
In a separate operation in Zamfara State, troops of 17 Brigade, operating under Operation Fansan Yamma, foiled a kidnapping attempt in Tsafe Local Government Area.
The troops responded after receiving reports that armed terrorists were attacking in the area.
They engaged the attackers, forcing them to flee and abandon their victims.
Six members of the same family were rescued unharmed and moved to a secure location, where they received care before being reunited with their relatives.
The operations come amid continued military efforts to disrupt terrorist and bandit networks operating across parts of the North-West.
Troops under Operation Fansan Yamma have continued to conduct raids, clearance operations and responses to distress calls as security agencies seek to limit attacks and kidnapping activities in the region.
In the Sokoto operation, the Army said the fleeing terrorists were pursued through clearance operations around the forest axis.
No further details were immediately provided on the identities of the suspected terrorist killed or the number of attackers who escaped.
