THESSALONIKI, Greece — A mid-air decompression nightmare unfolded on a Germany-bound Ryanair flight when a passenger window “detached” after being struck by engine debris, nearly sucking a male traveler out of the aircraft. The terrifying incident, which triggered immediate cabin decompression, forced quick-thinking passengers to physically battle the atmospheric pull to haul the victim back into the cabin.
The mid-air emergency occurred aboard a flight operating from Thessaloniki, Greece, to Memmingen, Germany. According to reports from Greek media, the aircraft was flying over North Macedonia when a piece of stray debris broke away from one of the plane’s engines, smashing directly into the fuselage and completely dislodging the passenger window.
Officials and witnesses confirmed on Friday that the victim, identified as a tourist from Serbia, survived the near-fatal pull because he had kept his safety restraint fastened. Although he sustained painful friction burns during the atmospheric struggle, authorities confirmed he has been hospitalized and remains in stable condition.
Recounting the panic in the cabin, a passenger told Radio Thessaloniki that the incident began with a sudden, deafening bang. “Most of us had fallen asleep; we had closed our eyes. There was a noise, like a tyre bursting,” she recalled. “We immediately realised there had been a decompression. There were screams … for a moment, I thought someone had accidentally opened the emergency door.”
The witness described a chaotic scene inside the cabin as emergency oxygen systems deployed instantly amid a strong odor. “The masks dropped and there was a strong smell. The head and shoulders of one passenger were outside the window. Fortunately, he hadn’t taken off his seat belt,” she said, adding that nearby travelers immediately surged forward to drag the Serbian tourist back to safety.
Responding to the security breach, the Irish low-cost carrier confirmed that the flight crew executed an immediate emergency turnaround. In an official statement, Ryanair noted that the flight “returned to Thessaloniki shortly after takeoff when a passenger window detached during the flight. The aircraft landed normally and the passengers returned to the terminal.”
To mitigate the major travel disruption, the airline quickly deployed a replacement aircraft at the Thessaloniki terminal to transport the remaining shaken passengers to their final destination in Memmingen. International aviation safety regulators are expected to launch a comprehensive probe into the mechanical failure of the engine housing that initiated the mid-air disaster.
