A football coach identified as Daso “Gaso” Ogan has been rescued by the Rivers State Police Command after he was allegedly assaulted and publicly paraded by members of a local vigilante group over claims that he magically caused another man’s manhood to disappear in Igwuruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The incident, which triggered outrage on social media after a video surfaced online, has renewed concerns over jungle justice and superstition-related accusations.
In the viral footage, Ogan was seen with his hands tied while members of the vigilante group interrogated and allegedly assaulted him.
The allegation stemmed from claims by a resident who accused the coach of causing the disappearance of his manhood after a brief encounter.
Ogan denied the accusation and maintained his innocence.
Relatives of the coach described the allegation as baseless and condemned the actions of the vigilante group, alleging that he sustained injuries before police officers intervened.
Human rights activist Prince Wiro also condemned the incident, describing the alleged torture and public humiliation as a violation of the victim’s fundamental rights.
He called for the prosecution of those involved and argued that claims of magical theft of human organs have no scientific or medical basis.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that officers rescued the coach from a mob and placed him in protective custody.
Police spokesperson ASP Grace Iringe-Koko urged residents to avoid jungle justice and allow law enforcement agencies to investigate allegations properly.
She warned that anyone found participating in mob action would face the full weight of the law.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of extrajudicial punishment and the need for public awareness on misinformation, superstition and the rule of law.
