Former Kano State Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, is reportedly edging closer to a return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following a series of high-level political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former Minister of Education, who is currently a key figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is said to be concluding consultations after holding separate closed-door meetings with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Sources familiar with the talks said Shekarau met President Tinubu in Lagos during the Easter break as part of efforts by APC stakeholders to strengthen the party’s political structure in Kano, one of Nigeria’s most strategic electoral states.

The consultations deepened on Sunday when Governor Yusuf, accompanied by Kano APC Chairman Umar Haruna Doguwa and Commissioner for Transportation Haruna Isa Dederi, visited Shekarau at his Kano residence in what observers described as a calculated move to consolidate forces ahead of 2027.

The development comes amid fast-moving political realignments in Kano.

Only weeks earlier, former Kano governor and Kwankwasiyya leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had also met Shekarau as part of consultations linked to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

However, indications suggest Shekarau may be leaning towards a return to the APC, a party he helped found before leaving after internal power struggles in the state.

His spokesperson, Associate Professor Sule Yau Sule, confirmed that the meetings took place but said consultations were still ongoing.

According to him, a final decision on Shekarau’s next political move will be made public after discussions are concluded.

Political observers believe any move by Shekarau to rejoin the APC could significantly alter Kano’s power dynamics and strengthen President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election calculations in the North-West.
