The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has appointed Afam Victor Ogene, a lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, as its new spokesperson in a move aimed at strengthening the opposition bloc’s engagement with Nigerians and enhancing its oversight role in the National Assembly.
The appointment was ratified during an online meeting of the caucus held on Friday and announced in a statement by the caucus leadership, which described Ogene as a seasoned parliamentarian with a strong background in journalism, public communication and legislative advocacy.
According to the statement, the caucus unanimously endorsed the lawmaker for the role, citing his experience as a ranking member of the House and his track record in promoting democratic accountability.
“Hon. Ogene is the Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress caucus in the House of Representatives and represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State. A ranking legislator and respected parliamentarian, Hon. Ogene brings to the role a wealth of legislative experience, deep understanding of parliamentary procedure, and an unflinching commitment to the defence of democratic ideals,” the statement said.
The caucus noted that Ogene would serve as the official voice of opposition lawmakers in the Green Chamber, communicating its position on major national issues, legislative developments and governance matters.
“As spokesperson, Hon. Ogene, an award-winning journalist and editor, will articulate the positions of the minority caucus on national issues, ensure effective communication with the Nigerian people, and uphold the caucus’ constitutional duty of holding the executive to account,” the statement added.
Ogene is serving a second term in the House of Representatives and currently leads the Nigeria Democratic Congress caucus. Before venturing into politics, he established a successful career in journalism and newspaper editing.
He has consistently spoken on issues relating to governance, accountability, electoral reforms and legislative independence.
The minority caucus said it believes his appointment will strengthen public engagement and reinforce democratic checks and balances within the 10th National Assembly.
“The caucus is confident that his appointment will strengthen its engagement with citizens and reinforce the principles of checks and balances in the 10th Assembly,” the statement said.
The caucus also appealed to members of the media and the public to support the new spokesperson as he assumes the role.
