United States President Donald Trump has criticised England manager Thomas Tuchel’s tactical approach in the Three Lions’ 2-1 FIFA World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, saying captain Harry Kane should not have been deployed in a defensive role.
Speaking during a reception at Trump Tower, Trump suggested England became too cautious after taking the lead through Anthony Gordon.
According to the US president, moving Kane into defensive duties reduced England’s attacking threat and allowed Argentina to mount a comeback.

Trump described the decision as unusual, while acknowledging that he was not a football coach.
Tuchel has come under increasing criticism following England’s late collapse after switching to a more defensive formation in the second half.
Argentina eventually fought back to secure a place in Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain.
The England coach has defended his tactical decisions despite criticism from supporters and pundits.
During the event, Trump also commented on FIFA’s decision to suspend the one-match ban handed to United States striker Folarin Balogun after his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The suspension was deferred for 12 months, allowing Balogun to feature against Belgium in the Round of 16.
Trump praised FIFA President Gianni Infantino and described the tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada as one of the greatest sporting events ever staged.
Infantino said the competition had exceeded expectations and united football fans from around the world.
