Panic erupted at Challenge Market in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Saturday after a commercial bus reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into a shop.
The 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus lost control near the busy Challenge intersection, veered off the road, broke through a concrete barricade and came to a stop inside the adjoining market.
No fatalities were recorded.
Eyewitnesses said the driver repeatedly shouted that the vehicle had lost its brakes while waving frantically to warn road users and officials of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority stationed at the junction.
According to witnesses, the traffic officials immediately cleared motorists and pedestrians from the area, helping to prevent what could have been a major disaster.
The bus eventually crashed through the concrete barrier before slamming into a shop within the market.
Residents and traders rushed to the scene as emergency responders and traffic officials secured the area and began clearing the wreckage.
Authorities later confirmed that no lives were lost, while efforts continued to restore the free flow of traffic at the busy junction.
The incident has renewed calls for regular maintenance and safety inspections of commercial vehicles operating on Nigerian roads.
