The Federal Government has approved a significant upward review of hazard allowances and other earned benefits for members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) working in federal universities, with the new package taking retrospective effect from January 1, 2026.

The approval was conveyed in a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission following an agreement reached between the Federal Government and NASU on June 29, 2026 after months of negotiations over improved welfare for non-teaching university workers.

One of the major highlights of the revised package is the increase in annual laboratory, workshop, studio, clinical and occupational hazard allowances.

Employees on CONTISS 1–5 will now receive N243,000 annually, up from N180,000, while workers on CONTISS 6–15 will earn N486,000 annually, compared to the previous N360,000.

The government also approved the payment of the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance and retained existing provisions for call duty, shift duty and clinical hazard allowances.

Senior administrative officers also benefited from higher responsibility allowances, with registrars and bursars receiving N840,000 annually, directors earning N600,000 annually and deputy registrars, deputy bursars and deputy directors receiving N480,000 annually.

Heads of departments and units will now receive N360,000 annually, while heads of sections will begin receiving N150,000 annually.

The remuneration package also includes higher field trip, teaching practice, industrial supervision and Students Work Experience Programme allowances across various CONTISS levels.

In addition, laboratory, workshop and studio personnel will receive a newly approved annual uniform and protective wear allowance of N80,000.

The government further announced that Provision Tools Allowance has been absorbed into the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance, while Excess Workload Allowance will be phased out in line with existing government policy.

The latest review follows prolonged discussions between the Federal Government and NASU over the need to update allowances that had remained largely unchanged since the 2009 agreement.

The approval is expected to strengthen industrial harmony across federal universities as negotiations continue with university-based unions on salaries, welfare and conditions of service.
