A student of the University of Lagos, Peter A. Fagbola, has brought international recognition to Nigeria after helping Team Nigeria Cloud emerge champions at the Huawei Global ICT Competition in Shenzhen, China, one of the world’s biggest technology contests for university students.

Fagbola, a Systems Engineering undergraduate in UNILAG’s Faculty of Engineering and a member of the ABS-CITS Huawei Academy, was part of the Nigerian team that secured first place in the Cloud Track, defeating competitors from universities across several countries. The victory also came with a cash prize of approximately ₦3.5 million for the team.

According to the University of Lagos, the student’s journey began at the national stage, where he emerged overall winner in the Cloud and Artificial Intelligence Track while representing the institution.

His success earned him qualification for the Southern Africa Regional Competition, where Team Nigeria also claimed first position to book a place at the global finals hosted by Huawei in Shenzhen, China.

At the international event, the Nigerian team outperformed top university teams from different regions to clinch the championship, reinforcing Nigeria’s growing reputation in cloud computing and emerging digital technologies.

Reacting to the achievement, the University of Lagos described the victory as a reflection of both Fagbola’s dedication and the quality of academic mentorship available at the institution.

“Mr. Fagbola’s success reflects not only his exceptional talent and dedication but also the quality of mentorship and training provided by UNILAG. His achievement is a testament to the University’s commitment to nurturing innovators who can compete and win at the highest levels,” the university said.

The institution disclosed that following the global triumph, Fagbola was invited to the Huawei Education Summit in Abuja alongside other outstanding award recipients, where they were formally recognised.

UNILAG added that the achievement should inspire students to pursue excellence in national and international competitions.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola congratulated the student on behalf of the university community, describing the feat as another milestone in the institution’s commitment to producing globally competitive graduates.

Huawei’s annual ICT Competition has become one of the world’s leading platforms for developing young digital talents. The competition attracts hundreds of thousands of university students from more than 100 countries and regions, focusing on cloud computing, networking, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

Nigeria’s latest success highlights the country’s growing influence in digital innovation and demonstrates the increasing quality of technology education and industry collaboration across its universities.
