Hull City have rewarded head coach Sergej Jakirović with a new two-year contract after the newly promoted side made a perfect start to their return to the Premier League.

The 49-year-old coach will remain at the MKM Stadium until the summer of 2028, with the club holding an option for a further 12 months, potentially keeping him at Hull through the 2028/29 season.

The club confirmed the agreement on Friday after Jakirović oversaw an impressive transformation since taking charge in June 2025.

He inherited a Hull side that had endured a difficult campaign but turned their fortunes around in his first season in English football, guiding the Tigers into the Championship play-offs and ultimately securing promotion to the Premier League.

Hull finished sixth in the Championship before overcoming Millwall in the semi-finals and Middlesbrough in the play-off final at Wembley.

Jakirović averaged 1.58 points per game during the regular Championship season and completed the promotion campaign with three consecutive clean sheets.

His side have carried that defensive discipline into the Premier League.

Hull began their return to the top flight with a stunning 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the MKM Stadium before defeating Coventry City 1-0 away from home.

Liam Millar scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute against Coventry, giving Hull six points from their opening two matches without conceding.

The result left the Tigers second in the early Premier League table behind Manchester City on goal difference.

Their opening-day victory over Manchester United was particularly memorable. It was Hull’s first league win over the Red Devils since 1974 and came as the Tigers returned to the top flight after nine years away.

Jakirović said he was delighted to continue his relationship with the club and supporters.

“I have felt the support from the club and our fans from the minute I arrived, so I am delighted that this journey will continue. Hull feels like my home and I’m excited for this journey to continue,” he said.

Reflecting on the club’s promotion and strong start, the coach added that Hull had demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest level.

“Promotion to the Premier League is a dream come true. You have to believe in your work and we have a special group here who are sticking together as a family,” Jakirović said.

“We have shown in our first games of the season that we can compete at this level and be dangerous.”

Hull chairman Acun Ilıcalı was equally pleased to secure the coach’s future.

“Everyone at the club believes that Sergej is a high-quality coach and it is a big privilege to have him here,” Ilıcalı said.

“He is the perfect coach for our vision and, having experienced last season together, we created some amazing moments at Wembley.”

The new agreement gives Jakirović a longer runway to build on Hull’s promotion and attempt to establish the club as a Premier League side.

His immediate challenge comes on Saturday when Hull host Aston Villa at the MKM Stadium, with the Tigers looking to extend their perfect start to three victories from three matches.
