The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed that all inmates being conveyed to court were safely returned to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Port Harcourt following an attack on their transport vehicle along Aba Road in Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, around the Oil Mill Market area, when the vehicle conveying inmates and correctional personnel reportedly encountered a traffic holdup and came under attack.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Service Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections J.N. Osuji, said members of the armed escort team fired warning shots into the air in an attempt to repel the attackers and protect the inmates.
The service did not disclose the number of inmates or correctional personnel in the vehicle. It also did not provide details about the identities of the alleged attackers or the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
However, the NCoS expressed concern over the fatal incident and extended its sympathy to the family of the victim and others affected.
“The service expresses sympathy to the family of the victim and all those affected by this incident,” the statement read.
The service condemned the attack, warning that such actions endangered lives, threatened public safety and obstructed the lawful discharge of official responsibilities.
“The service strongly condemns the attack on the vehicles conveying inmates and personnel on legitimate national assignment,” it stated.
Security authorities investigate incident
The NCoS said relevant security authorities were investigating the incident to establish what happened and determine responsibility in accordance with the law.
It pledged to cooperate with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the investigation was conducted through due process.
“The Service will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the matter is addressed through due process,” Osuji said.
The service also urged members of the public to exercise restraint, respect law enforcement operations and avoid actions capable of escalating tense situations.
Reassuring residents of its commitment to security, the NCoS said it remained focused on ensuring the safe custody of inmates, protecting its personnel and maintaining public safety while carrying out its statutory responsibilities.
It appealed to residents to remain calm and allow the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
Although the service confirmed that all inmates were returned safely to the custodial centre, the circumstances surrounding the reported fatality remain subject to investigation.
