Former Arsenal academy goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has officially been cleared by FIFA to represent Nigeria at the senior level, handing the Super Eagles a timely boost amid lingering concerns over the team’s goalkeeping department.

Checks on FIFA’s Change of Association platform confirmed that the 24-year-old Wrexham shot-stopper has completed his international switch from England to Nigeria, making him immediately eligible for selection.

Born in Camden, London, to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo previously represented England across multiple youth levels, featuring for the U-15, U-16, U-17, and U-18 sides. However, he never made a senior appearance for the Three Lions, paving the way for the switch under FIFA eligibility rules.

The towering goalkeeper, who currently stars for Wrexham in the English Championship, has impressed this season with a string of strong performances and crucial saves, further boosting calls for his inclusion in the Super Eagles setup.

Okonkwo, a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, left the North London club permanently in 2024 after several loan spells and has since established himself as Wrexham’s first-choice goalkeeper.

His arrival is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s options in goal, a position that has remained under scrutiny in recent months.

Stanley Nwabali, who was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the last Africa Cup of Nations, is currently without a club, while other options, including Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho, have faced criticism over inconsistent performances.

The switch is also seen as a significant win for the Nigeria Football Federation and the Super Eagles technical crew as they continue efforts to strengthen the squad ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
