Barcelona have submitted an official €100 million offer for Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, triggering one of the biggest transfer sagas of the European summer window as the Argentine forward reportedly pushes for an exit from the Spanish capital.

The offer, described as a straight cash proposal with no player swap or performance-related add-ons, marks Barcelona’s first formal approach for the 26-year-old attacker, who has emerged as one of the club’s top transfer priorities under manager Hansi Flick.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Friday that Atlético Madrid were unhappy with developments surrounding the deal over the past 24 hours, especially after Álvarez allegedly informed the club of his intention to leave this summer.

“Barcelona sent the first official proposal to Atlético Madrid for Julián Álvarez worth €100m. No add-ons, no players involved. Atlético is not happy about the situation over the last 24 hours—but Julián has already asked to leave,” Romano posted.

Reports in Spain indicate that Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco have already held talks with Álvarez’s representatives as the Catalan giants intensify efforts to secure the forward ahead of next season.

Despite the growing speculation, Atlético Madrid have publicly maintained that Álvarez is not for sale, with club insiders insisting the striker remains central to Diego Simeone’s long-term plans.

The conflicting narratives have added fresh tension to negotiations, with Atlético believed to value the Argentina international significantly above Barcelona’s opening bid. Reports in Spain suggest the Madrid side could demand between €120m and €150m before considering any deal.

Álvarez joined Atlético Madrid from Manchester City in 2024 and quickly established himself as one of Simeone’s most important attacking players. He remains under contract until 2030 and reportedly has a release clause worth around €500m.

Barcelona’s aggressive pursuit of the World Cup-winning forward comes amid a major squad rebuild under Flick, with the club also linked in recent days to Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.

Sources close to the negotiations believe talks could continue in the coming days, particularly if Álvarez formally pushes for a transfer or refuses to discuss a contract extension with Atlético Madrid.
