Florentino Pérez will remain president of Real Madrid after securing victory in the club’s first contested presidential election in 20 years.

The result, announced on Monday by Real Madrid’s Electoral Board, gives Pérez a fresh mandate to continue leading the Spanish football powerhouse after defeating businessman Enrique Riquelme.

Official figures released by the club showed Pérez received 21,741 votes, representing 65 per cent of ballots cast, while Riquelme secured 11,814 votes, accounting for 35 per cent.

“With 100% of the in-person and postal votes counted, the candidacy headed by Mr. Florentino Pérez has won the elections for President and Board of Directors of Real Madrid,” the Electoral Board stated.

The victory extends Pérez’s long-standing influence at the club. Since first assuming office in 2000 and returning in 2009, he has overseen one of the most successful eras in Real Madrid’s history.

Under his leadership, the club has won numerous domestic and European trophies while expanding its global commercial footprint and strengthening its position among football’s most valuable brands.

The election represented a rare challenge to Pérez’s authority. Riquelme emerged as the first significant opponent he has faced in two decades, campaigning on promises of reform and criticism of plans that could alter aspects of the club’s ownership structure.

The campaign generated considerable interest among members and sparked debate over Real Madrid’s future direction, governance and long-term financial strategy.

Attention is now expected to turn toward the club’s sporting plans, transfer activity and preparations for the upcoming season.

Pérez will continue working with a board that includes vice presidents Eduardo Fernández de Blas, Pedro López Jiménez, Enrique Sánchez González and Enrique Pérez Rodríguez.

His latest victory ensures that he remains one of the most powerful figures in world football as Real Madrid continue pursuing success on and off the pitch.
