Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling cancer.

The actor died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a prolonged health battle that had sparked an outpouring of concern and support from colleagues, fans and well-wishers.

His daughter, Kaira Taiwo, reportedly broke down during an Instagram live session as she confirmed her father’s death.

The development came barely a week after Ogogo’s daughters, Kaira and Lima, made emotional appeals for urgent medical assistance for their father.

The sisters had revealed that the veteran actor was battling stage-four cancer, with the condition reportedly affecting his abdomen.

Kaira said doctors had informed the family that chemotherapy could no longer be administered because of the severity of his condition. The family subsequently began exploring other treatment options while seeking assistance from medical professionals and well-wishers.

The appeal generated an extraordinary response.

Veteran actor Yinka Quadri disclosed that the family received hundreds of offers from people willing to assist Ogogo medically, spiritually and in other ways.

According to Quadri, more than 300 people had initially reached out, with the number eventually rising to over 500.

The volume of offers, however, created another challenge for the family, as Ogogo remained in hospital and could not easily be moved from one facility or treatment programme to another.

Several prominent figures in the entertainment industry also rallied around the actor during his final days.

Actress Toyosi Adesanya disclosed that Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, had supported efforts to secure specialist medical attention for Ogogo and had contacted cancer specialists.

The actor’s worsening condition also prompted colleagues in the Yoruba film industry to organise a special prayer session for him days before his death.

Ogogo’s passing has now sent shockwaves through Nollywood, particularly the Yoruba-language film community where he was regarded as one of its veteran figures.

He was closely associated with the Odunfa Caucus, an influential theatre group that played an important role in developing generations of Yoruba actors and filmmakers.

Throughout his career, Ogogo became known for his commanding screen presence and performances in numerous Yoruba-language productions. His work helped cement the popularity of indigenous-language cinema among Nigerian audiences.

His death was met with tributes from colleagues, including actor Saheed Balogun, who mourned the veteran star in an emotional social media post.

Balogun wrote: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. You can rest now my brother Taiwo Hassan Ogogo. May Almighty Allah guide you through Aljannah. This is truly painful.”

Ogogo’s death comes only days after his family and colleagues were searching for ways to extend his treatment and save his life.

The actor leaves behind a long career and a legacy that stretches across generations of Nigeria’s Yoruba film industry.
