Lionel Messi is expected to make his return to action when Argentina face Iceland in their final preparation match ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with head coach Lionel Scaloni confirming the captain is ready to feature after recovering from a hamstring concern.

The reigning world champions will take on Iceland on Tuesday in Auburn, Alabama, in what is expected to be their final opportunity to fine-tune preparations before beginning their title defence.

Messi missed Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Honduras on June 6 after experiencing muscle fatigue in his left hamstring. The Inter Miami star had arrived at the national team camp carrying discomfort sustained during an MLS fixture before the league paused for the World Cup.

Speaking ahead of the Iceland clash, Scaloni said the coaching staff would carefully manage Messi’s workload to avoid any setbacks.

“Messi will play, I just don’t know how many minutes,” Scaloni said.

The Argentina manager stressed that player fitness remains a priority as the South American giants prepare for another World Cup campaign.

Argentina have also received encouraging news on several players who were recently dealing with injury concerns. Nico Paz, Nahuel Molina and Gonzalo Montiel are all available for selection after returning to full training.

Scaloni also revealed that Julian Alvarez is recovering well from ankle discomfort, while Leandro Paredes is nearing a return to full training.

One issue still facing the Argentine camp is the absence of defender Leonardo Balerdi, who was ruled out of the tournament after suffering a calf injury. A final decision on a replacement is expected after the Iceland match.

Argentina enter the competition among the favourites to retain the trophy they won in Qatar in 2022. With Messi leading a squad blending experienced stars and emerging talents, expectations remain high as the World Cup draws closer.

The Albiceleste begin their Group J campaign against Algeria on June 16 before facing Austria and Jordan in the group stage.

For supporters, the match against Iceland could provide the clearest sign yet that Messi will be fully fit when Argentina’s title defence officially gets underway.
