The United States Department of Justice has filed a civil case to revoke the citizenship of Emmanuel Oluwatosin Kazeem, a Nigerian national convicted of large-scale identity theft and tax fraud.
According to a statement released by the department, the complaint was submitted to a federal court in Baltimore. Authorities allege that Kazeem obtained U.S. citizenship by failing to disclose his involvement in criminal activities.
Investigators said the scheme affected more than 259,000 individuals and involved attempts to fraudulently obtain over $91 million from the Internal Revenue Service.
Kazeem was previously convicted in 2017 on multiple charges, including mail fraud, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The Justice Department stated that the current legal action is aimed at revoking his naturalised citizenship on the grounds of misrepresentation and concealment of material facts during the application process.
