The Ekiti State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged killing of a 25-year-old woman, Kehinde Onizeokaraga, during a marital dispute in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

The woman was allegedly attacked with a machete by her husband, identified as Sodiq Ibrahim, during an attempt to resolve disagreements between the couple.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday when Kehinde went to the residence of a family acquaintance where efforts were being made to mediate in the troubled marriage.

A cousin of the deceased, Yussuf Lawrence, said Kehinde had been preparing to leave Ado Ekiti when she was invited to the residence.

He said she did not know that her husband would also be present.

According to Lawrence, the attempt to resolve the couple’s disagreement later degenerated into a physical confrontation.

He alleged that Ibrahim attacked Kehinde repeatedly with a machete, leaving her with severe injuries that resulted in her death.

The woman’s body was subsequently deposited in a mortuary, according to family sources.

Lawrence said the family was devastated by the incident and appealed to the police to intensify efforts to locate Ibrahim, who was reportedly said to have fled after the attack.

He also alleged that some individuals had been taken into police custody in connection with the incident.

The family member further claimed that Ibrahim fled with Kehinde’s mobile phone, which he believed could contain information useful to investigators.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti State, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident.

Abutu said the Commissioner of Police, CP Michael Falade, had ordered a thorough investigation to ensure that the alleged perpetrator was apprehended and brought to justice.

The police have not disclosed further details about the investigation or announced any charge against the husband.

The circumstances that led to the confrontation and the events surrounding Kehinde’s death are expected to be established through the investigation.

The family has called for justice for the deceased, while the police continue efforts to establish the facts and determine whether anyone should face criminal charges.
