Three Nigerian female wrestlers have secured scholarship transfers to Iowa State University, one of the United States’ leading NCAA Division I wrestling programmes, in a significant milestone for Nigerian wrestling and athlete development.
Kolawole Esther, Christinah Ogunsanya and Adekoye Jumoke completed their move from William Penn University, an NAIA institution, to Iowa State, where they will now compete in NCAA Division I—the highest level of collegiate athletics in the United States.
The development has been hailed as a major achievement by the head coach of Nigeria’s women’s wrestling team, Akuh Purity, who credited the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for creating opportunities that have enabled Nigerian wrestlers to gain international recognition.
According to Purity, the athletes’ transfer reflects years of investment in talent development and exposure through international competitions, where the trio consistently impressed against world-class opponents.
“This achievement is a testament to the vision and dedication of the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation. His financial investment and commitment to athlete development have showcased the immense talent of our wrestlers on the international stage. Seeing Kolawole Esther, Christinah Ogunsanya and Adekoye Jumoke earn transfers to Iowa State University is a proud moment for Nigerian wrestling,” he said.
Purity explained that the wrestlers attracted the attention of recruiters through their performances in international tournaments and praised the federation’s continued support for athlete development.
He added that competing in NCAA Division I would provide the athletes with elite-level training, quality education and valuable international experience.
The coach expressed confidence that the breakthrough would motivate more young Nigerian wrestlers to pursue excellence and called for sustained investment in grassroots wrestling and high-performance programmes.
The scholarship transfers underscore Nigeria’s growing influence in women’s wrestling and demonstrate how consistent international exposure can open doors to academic and sporting opportunities abroad.
