African startups are entering a new phase of innovation in which artificial intelligence is expected to complement, rather than replace, the fintech sector that has dominated the continent’s technology ecosystem for more than a decade, according to venture capital firm Gullit VC.

The investment firm said the next wave of value creation will come from startups that combine established financial infrastructure with AI-powered solutions to address real-world challenges across key sectors of the economy.

Managing Director of Gullit VC, Hiruy Amanuel, said Africa’s greatest opportunities are emerging where technology intersects with infrastructure, adding that the firm’s investment strategy focuses on businesses developing practical solutions to economic challenges.

Fintech has long been the backbone of Africa’s startup ecosystem, driving the growth of digital payments, mobile wallets, digital lending and agency banking while expanding financial inclusion across the continent.

According to Partech Africa, fintech remained the largest startup investment category in Africa in 2025, accounting for about one-quarter of total venture capital raised.

Gullit VC said artificial intelligence should be viewed as an intelligence layer that enhances existing financial systems rather than replacing them.

The firm argued that fintech has already built much of the digital infrastructure required for AI-powered services to scale effectively.

It expects African AI innovation to focus on solving practical problems in sectors such as financial services, agriculture, healthcare and logistics instead of developing large foundational AI models.

In financial services, AI could improve credit scoring, fraud detection, customer verification and risk assessment, helping expand access to finance for underserved individuals and businesses.

The venture capital firm also believes many successful African companies will integrate AI into existing products without necessarily branding themselves as AI companies.

According to Gullit VC, the startups that thrive in Africa’s next technology cycle will be those that combine financial infrastructure with intelligent systems to improve business efficiency and economic productivity.

Analysts say the evolution reflects a broader shift in Africa’s innovation ecosystem as entrepreneurs move beyond digital finance toward technology solutions that address wider development challenges.
