The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Anambra State has inaugurated its Obi-Kwankwaso Presidential Campaign Council, setting an ambitious target of securing up to two million votes for its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2027 general elections.
The inauguration took place on Wednesday at King David Hotel in Awka, the state capital, as the party intensified efforts to strengthen its structures and mobilise supporters across the state’s 21 local government areas.
The council is expected to coordinate campaign activities, drive grassroots mobilisation and oversee the party’s presidential and legislative campaigns ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Anambra State NDC Chairman, Ikem Uzoezie, described the inauguration as the beginning of an intensive mobilisation exercise aimed at securing victory for Obi and other party candidates.
He said the council would coordinate house-to-house campaigns and ensure the party’s message reached voters across the state.
Uzoezie urged members to approach the assignment with commitment, honesty and civility, warning them against relying on political sentiment or underestimating the activities of rival parties.
He expressed confidence in the party’s electoral prospects, claiming that the NDC could secure 98 per cent of the votes in Anambra.
The chairman also disclosed plans for a homecoming and mega rally for Obi in the state later in November, describing the event as part of efforts to consolidate support for the former Anambra governor.
In his acceptance speech, the council’s State Coordinator, Dr Ifeanyi Ibezi, pledged that members would work towards delivering between 1.5 million and two million votes for Obi.
He said the target reflected the confidence of party members in Obi’s political appeal and the growing support the NDC believes it enjoys across different parts of the country.
Ibezi compared Obi’s popularity to that of prominent Nigerian political figures, including the late nationalist and former President, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, and former Premier of Eastern Nigeria, Dr Michael Okpara.
He argued that Obi’s socioeconomic philosophy was attracting interest beyond traditional regional and ethnic political divisions.
According to him, the political appeal of Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, offered the party an opportunity to build a broad electoral coalition ahead of the polls.
Ibezi also declared that the NDC intended to win elections across Anambra, including legislative contests, and urged members to take the party’s message to all 5,526 polling units in the state.
The council’s leadership includes Deputy State Coordinator Egwuoba Innocent and Campaign Secretary Paulinus Izuchukwu, alongside other party officials.
It has also established directorates covering media and publicity, finance, logistics, women and youth mobilisation, security, grassroots mobilisation, election monitoring and vote protection, new media, protocol, policy research and documentation.
The structure is expected to provide the organisational framework for coordinating the party’s activities across the state and supporting its candidates at different levels.
The inauguration comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State House of Assembly elections are fixed for February 6.
The NDC’s Anambra mobilisation drive therefore places the state at the centre of its efforts to build support for Obi and other candidates ahead of the nationwide polls.
However, the vote figures announced by party officials remain campaign targets and projections, rather than verified indications of electoral support.
