Davido backs Adeleke, slams APC over Osun projects

The Afrobeats star says the APC cannot stop what he calls Adeleke’s “God’s project” as the Osun governorship election approaches.

Afrobeats star Davido has thrown his weight behind his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, while accusing the All Progressives Congress of opposing development in the state.

Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, made the remarks on Monday after Adeleke inaugurated the Lagere Flyover and associated road infrastructure in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The singer posted videos from the inauguration on X, drawing attention to the large crowd that attended the event.

Reacting to one of the videos, Davido wrote, “Jesus, see Ile-Ife crowd!! For @AAdeleke_01!!! Done deal! You can’t stop God’s project!!”

In another post, he directly attacked the APC, asking why the party would oppose projects aimed at improving infrastructure.

“APC is just backward. Why would they be doing anything to stop progress? Thought y’all were progressives??” he wrote.

Davido also mocked what he described as efforts to mobilise social media influencers against Adeleke, alleging that some had been offered financial and logistical incentives to attend political events.

The comments came as the governor showcased one of his administration’s major infrastructure projects in Ile-Ife, only days before the Osun governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed August 15, 2026, for the Osun governorship election.

Adeleke is seeking a second term on the platform of the Accord Party, while the APC is fielding Bola Oyebamiji, a former Osun Commissioner for Finance and former managing director of the National Inland Waterways Authority.

The election has intensified political competition in the state, with infrastructure and the performance of the incumbent administration forming a major part of the campaign debate.

The Lagere project dates back to May 2024, when Adeleke formally flagged off construction of the flyover at Lagere Junction.

The Osun State Government said the flyover was awarded to Sammya Nigeria Limited at a contract sum of ₦14.938bn, with a 12-month completion period.

The same ceremony also marked the commencement of 55.86 kilometres of local government roads across the state at a separate cost of more than ₦30.6bn.

The Lagere Junction project is strategically important because of the volume of commercial and vehicular activity around the area.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, had earlier described the flyover as critical to the development of Ile-Ife and commended the Adeleke administration for the project.

The Adeleke administration has increasingly presented road construction, bridges and other infrastructure projects as evidence of its performance ahead of the election.

In July, the governor also commissioned the Lameco Flyover Bridge in Osogbo as part of what the state government described as a wider infrastructure programme.

The infrastructure debate has, however, become intertwined with the wider political contest between Adeleke and the APC. Adeleke’s camp has repeatedly accused the opposition of attempting to undermine his administration, allegations the APC has rejected.

Davido’s latest intervention adds a celebrity voice to an increasingly intense campaign. His support for Adeleke is not new, as the singer has repeatedly used his substantial social media following to promote his uncle and defend his administration.

With the election just days away, the political battle is increasingly being fought both on the campaign trail and across social media, where supporters of the competing parties continue to trade claims over governance, infrastructure and public support.

The immediate question is whether the momentum generated by projects such as the Lagere Flyover will translate into electoral support when voters head to the polls on August 15.
