Operatives of the Bauchi State Police Command attached to the Gumau Division have arrested a resident of Lame in Toro Local Government Area, identified as Balarabe Adamu, over the alleged defilement of his eight-month-old stepdaughter.

The incident came to light on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at approximately 5:34 pm, after a formal report was lodged detailing how the suspect allegedly sexually abused the infant inside his residence. According to preliminary findings, the victim had been brought to the house by her mother, who is married to the suspect.

Following the report, police personnel swiftly moved in, apprehending Adamu while immediately securing medical intervention for the survivor. The infant was rushed to the General Hospital, Toro, where she underwent emergency medical examination and treatment.

Confirming the development in a statement issued on Thursday on behalf of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, stated that the suspect remains in custody as detectives intensify their probe.

“Upon receipt of the report, operatives attached to Gumau Division swiftly responded and arrested the suspect. He is currently in custody and undergoing investigation,” Habib stated.

Condemning the act in strong terms, CP Aliyu assured the public that the command would conduct a meticulous investigation to ensure justice is served without delay. He maintained that the police hierarchy would maintain zero tolerance for gender-based violence and child abuse across the state.

“The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation, in accordance with the law,” the police chief added.

The development comes amid heightened calls by civil society organizations and child welfare advocates in Bauchi State demanding stricter enforcement of protection laws against pedophiles and perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Local community leaders in Toro LGA have also expressed shock over the incident, urging the judiciary to process the matter swiftly once formal charges are filed in court.
