The Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Bathiya Wesley, has denied reports that he plans to defect from the All Progressives Congress to the Action People’s Movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The rumour surfaced less than 24 hours after former Assembly Speaker and Yola-South State Constituency lawmaker, Kabiru Mijinyawa, left the APC for the APM alongside thousands of his supporters.
Mijinyawa, who announced his defection amid growing tensions within the Adamawa APC, accused the party leadership of abandoning democratic principles.
He alleged that the state chapter was being run as a private estate by a few individuals, a situation he said was undermining the party’s progress.
Mijinyawa’s exit followed the defection of hundreds of APC chieftains led by Tahir Shehu to the APM.
Amid the defections, an APC executive member told PUNCH Online on Tuesday in Yola that Wesley was also planning to leave the ruling party.
The party official, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly on the matter, alleged that the Speaker was considering the move after being denied an opportunity to contest for a House of Representatives seat on the APC platform.
