Brentford handed Chelsea a damaging 3-0 defeat on Friday, exposing the London club’s defensive frailties and extending Xabi Alonso’s winless Premier League run to three matches.

Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho struck after half-time as Brentford maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign and climbed to third in the Premier League table.

Chelsea, meanwhile, were left with another defensive headache heading into the international break.

The result was a sharp setback for Alonso, who had enjoyed an encouraging opening to his Chelsea tenure. The Blues began the campaign with two victories, but have now taken just one point from their last three league fixtures.

Chelsea had looked more controlled during a largely uneventful first half at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The visitors struggled, however, to turn possession into clear chances, with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers unable to make a decisive impact as Brentford defended with discipline.

The hosts became increasingly dangerous after the interval and took the lead in the 61st minute from a set-piece.

Mikkel Damsgaard delivered a corner into the area, with Jannik Schuster heading the ball back across goal. Anthony was left unmarked and headed into the net from close range.

Chelsea attempted to respond, but their search for an equaliser left spaces for Brentford to exploit.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 83rd minute after Kevin Schade broke forward and saw his effort saved. Thiago reacted quickest to the rebound and fired home to end his wait for a Premier League goal this season.

The Brazilian striker scored 25 times last season and earned a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup. His goal against Chelsea provided a timely reminder of his threat in front of goal.

Brentford completed the rout in stoppage time.

Schade’s low delivery was deflected into the path of Carvalho, who fired past Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez in the fourth minute of added time.

The defeat leaves Alonso with a three-week international break to address a defence that has repeatedly been breached during the opening weeks of his reign.

Chelsea have conceded 12 goals in their opening five Premier League matches, underlining the scale of the defensive problems facing the new manager.

For Brentford boss Keith Andrews, the victory continued an impressive start to the season. The Bees had also defeated Tottenham 3-0 on the opening weekend and remain unbeaten after five league matches.

Chelsea’s immediate challenge will be to restore defensive organisation while finding greater attacking consistency when the Premier League resumes after the international break.
