Several people are feared dead and many others injured after explosions occurred in parts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday evening.
According to reports, the blasts occurred around 7:02 p.m. near the popular Monday Market and close to a security checkpoint at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
Emergency responders were deployed to the locations shortly after the incident. The Head of Operations of the Federal Fire Service in Borno State, Mohammed Kafaran, confirmed the explosion and said officials had been sent to assess the situation.
Kafaran stated that response teams were already at the scene to determine the extent of the damage and casualties.
Eyewitnesses reported that several injured individuals were transported to medical facilities, including the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri, for treatment. Some residents also said bodies were seen at the scene following the blasts.
One witness described hearing a loud explosion shortly after leaving a nearby area.
Authorities are continuing rescue and assessment operations as further details about the incident remain pending.
