Former Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike has criticised some Nigerian governors over alleged mismanagement of public funds, describing the country as an “embezzlement ground” and accusing political office holders of lacking plans for the future of their states.
Emenike expressed his frustration in an Instagram post on Wednesday, October 14, questioning the priorities of some governors and the conduct of security personnel assigned to protect them.
The former international alleged that some state leaders were more concerned about diverting public funds than developing their states.
“The arrogance and confidence in some of these governors make me sick, and a lot of them don’t have good plans for the future of their state. Zero plans,” he wrote.
Emenike also criticised police officers and soldiers assigned to political office holders, suggesting that some continue to protect politicians despite experiencing economic hardship.
“Just embezzle money, and una police and army go still follow them with empty stomachs. Jokers,” he added.
Expressing his disappointment with the country’s situation, the former striker said he had once believed Nigeria represented a country to be proud of during his playing career.
“Nigeria is finished and gone. We thought it was a country when we played, not knowing that it is an embezzlement ground. Embezzlement group of companies,” he wrote.
Emenike did not mention any governor by name or provide specific examples to substantiate his allegations.
Emenike raises concerns over governance
The former footballer’s comments have brought attention to wider questions about public accountability, government spending and the delivery of essential services.
State governments are responsible for implementing policies and providing services in areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure and social development.
Concerns about how public funds are managed remain part of Nigeria’s public debate, particularly when citizens demand greater transparency and measurable improvements in their living conditions.
Emenike’s remarks also questioned the relationship between political office holders and the security personnel assigned to protect them.
However, he did not identify specific officers or describe particular incidents involving police or military personnel.
The former striker’s post did not identify a political party or indicate that he intended to pursue a political career.
Former Super Eagles striker’s career
Emenike represented Nigeria’s senior national team from 2011 to 2015, making his international debut in February 2011.
He retired from international football in October 2015 after recording nine goals in 37 appearances for the Super Eagles.
The striker was one of Nigeria’s key players during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, where the national team won its third continental title.
Nigeria defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final, with Sunday Mba scoring the winning goal.
Emenike finished the tournament with four goals, sharing the top-scorer award with Ghana’s Mubarak Wakaso.
He scored against Burkina Faso, Zambia, Ivory Coast and Mali during Nigeria’s successful campaign and earned recognition for his contribution to the team’s title-winning run.
Although an injury prevented him from featuring in the final, his goals had helped Nigeria reach the decisive match.
No governors named in criticism
Emenike’s latest comments amount to a broad criticism of governance and alleged corruption rather than a formal allegation against a named individual.
He did not provide documentary evidence or refer to specific investigations involving the governors he criticised.
His remarks nevertheless add to public discussions about accountability, the management of state resources and the responsibility of elected officials to improve the lives of Nigerians.
