A teenage boy has been hospitalised after he was hit by a vehicle while crossing the Onipanu Bus Rapid Transit corridor inward Fadeyi, Lagos State.
The incident occurred at about 4:30pm on Wednesday, with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency’s Cobra Response Team arriving at the scene two minutes later.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the teenager sustained head and leg injuries in the hit-and-run crash.
The emergency team provided immediate assistance and transported the victim to the Trauma Centre for further medical treatment.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged motorists to avoid reckless driving and speeding and obey traffic regulations, while advising pedestrians to use pedestrian bridges and designated crossing points.
The incident was one of two separate crashes handled by emergency responders around Onipanu on Wednesday.
Earlier, at about 5:10am, LASEMA responded to a crash involving a HOWO truck and a black Toyota Camry opposite the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Onipanu, inward Fadeyi.
The truck, with registration number T-36016LA, collided with the Camry, marked FST-970KS.
According to the agency, preliminary investigation linked the crash to reckless driving and speeding by the truck driver.
LASEMA responders, working with the police and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, diverted traffic to prevent secondary crashes while recovery operations were carried out.
The damaged Camry was towed to the Onipanu Police Station, while the truck was driven to the station.
No life was lost in the early-morning crash, and the road was subsequently cleared and reopened to traffic.
The latest incident comes days after another hit-and-run crash in Lagos claimed the life of Police Inspector Mercy Bassey.
Bassey was reportedly on route-lining duty ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s arrival in Lagos on October 1 when she was struck by a black Highlander SUV while crossing the Third Mainland Bridge at the Adekunle Intersection, inward Lagos Island.
The police inspector, who was attached to the Ikotun Divisional Police Station, was reportedly rushed to General Hospital, Ebute Metta, where she later died.
The driver of the SUV reportedly fled the scene, and police subsequently began efforts to identify the vehicle and apprehend the driver.
The incidents have renewed attention on the risks faced by pedestrians and motorists on Lagos roads, particularly where speeding, reckless driving and hit-and-run incidents are involved.
LASEMA reiterated its commitment to rapid emergency response and urged road users to exercise caution and comply with traffic-safety regulations.
